To ease the display and use of a cloud of points, it is useful to isolate certain groups of points depending on their location (spatial segmentation) according to their function (by business segment) or according to their usefulness (cleaning points superfluous or out of area).

These groups of points cut and isolated (segmented) can then be classified by layer (piping, instrum, elec, equipment, structure) that is displayed or not.

It is often very relevant to only display items for the segmented structure of a building or equipment to assess its strength, its layout, its distortions, its ability to accommodate new equipment.
